- Gas valve key (a short manual key) about 3 inches long, used to turn on/off a gas valve for a log lighter or gas‑assist ignition in a fireplace or fire pit
- The key fits over or into the valve stem of a gas control valve (often a “key valve” or “plug valve”) and allows you to manually rotate (turn) the valve to open or close the gas flow to the log lighter or burner
- Because it’s short (3″), it’s typically used in installations where the valve is near the face of the fireplace or in a shallow mounting position (i.e. doesn’t require a long reach)
- When you open the valve, gas flows to the lighter bar or ignition port; you ignite it to produce a flame that helps start the wood logs
- Once the fire is stable, you turn the key to the off position to stop the gas flow to the lighter
